“The whole world is filled with things
that are just waiting for someone to come along
and find them, and that’s just what a turnupstufffer
does.”

Pippi Longstocking, Turnupstuffer

I have been working as an artist in Berlin since 1982, considering myself as a huntress
and a collector of objects, which I find either at scrapyards, in streets or in the nature
– objects from a poetic arts world-to-be, that are passed carelessly by others.
To see means – to perceive, to differentiate, to recognize, to experience, to discover,
to make an effort, to be aware, to care, to be concerned, to sharpen the view, to give away
a glance & - --to look behind.I don’t work with sketches nor models, but do rely on my
intuition andcreate an individual work of art, inspired by the given material and its
specific shapes:
This is the birth of metal creatures & cabinets ofcuriosities, made from worn out relics
that have their own story andstart a new life by becoming building-blocks of a newborn
identity. These objects’ secret spirit as well as their hidden beauty are to be dismantled
by the power of artistic inspiration.I use to work with images & associations from
mythology andethnic studies. A lot of my works – in particular the “WUNDERKAMMERN”
tell about forgotten/ represssed/ falsified history.

My artistic work covers five different areas:

Wandering on the Wild Side, Wunderkammern, sculpture, creatures, spirits of nature.

WANDERING ON THE WILD SIDE

is a joined project with photo artist Iris Weirich consisting of photo works, publications
& exhibitions. It focuses around our branded figure Sir Reynard, embodied by myself
wearing an elaborate fox mask and costumes from different periods.
This fox is a time traveller & border crosser between wilderness & civilization,
who emerges from the reign of the last impenetrable woods to travel the human world:
significant cultural & historic sites as well as the modern urban environment

WUNDERKAMMERN

Inspired by the Renaissance cabinets of curiosities, where the unusual, the rare or
the deformed used to be exhibited, I have been developing my WUNDERKAMMERN
since 2000; small chambers, in which I model poetic miniature landscapes, consisting
of precious & worthless, ordinary & unusual, natural & artificial materials.
The topic of my Wunderkammern is the great goddess in all her various incarnations,
from Ishtar & Freya, to Kali & The Virgin Mary, to Barbarella.
The showrooms become temples furnished with velvet & silk, incense & watergames,
divans & furs & sacred music.

“Come and enter the WUNDERKAMMERN by Mona Fux, made of iron & wood/
velvet & silk/ bones & stones/ love & spirit.
Be enchanted by Venus & Kirke/ Stella Mari & Medea/ Shiva & Parvati.

All of them tell you about female power and male desire – love & death/ body & spirit –

Come and enter!

SCULPTURE

The up to 4-metre sculptures, consisting of rusty iron and steel, are of an
improvisatory nature. The single parts are obviously put-together.
I don’t strive for technical perfection. The reference point is the figure,
either human or animal, which I create from iron, sometimes as a hint only,
sometimes as a rough copy of nature.

CREATURE

My creatures are high-energy beings from different worlds, who I provide
with bodies of metal & bones – two materials that attract me through their
opposing nature: one of them seemingly made for eternity, cold & rigid, the other
warm & delicate & transitory.
Together with Uli Kattenstroth – a powerful writer & copy artist – I work on the project
“Genesis I.”, that will describe the voyage of my creatures through space & time.
“And be aware, in the course of their eternal voyage, those pregnant messengers have
turned their restless attention to the devastated ruins of Monaceros, bathed in blood light,
to dream their dream of Moloch.”

“Now they’re squating among the scrap yards of the terrestrial civilization,
busy feasting on its remains.”

SPIRITS OF NATURE

Forest demons & Kielköppe, Pillewiggies & Kornböcke are capricious & shy beings,
who can hardly ever be put under anyone’s spell. Yet, in exchange for a small dish of mash,
they’re sometimes ready to model for an open-eyed person. Therefore you can discover
rather awkward & rare beings on my slates.
